A city of neighborhoods: where to begin in Columbus

A starting point for exploring Columbus one neighborhood, block, and local place at a time.

NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDEOctober 2, 2026

Columbus is easier to know one neighborhood at a time. Start with a district, walk a few blocks, and let local places set the pace.

Start in the center.

Downtown connects civic landmarks, the Scioto Mile riverfront, arts institutions, and the Arena District. North Market Downtown is a practical first stop for independent vendors and makers. Walk east for the Columbus Museum of Art on Broad Street.

Follow High Street north.

Short North is known for galleries, independent shops, and restaurants. Continue toward the University District for campus culture and contemporary art at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

Make room for a detour.

German Village’s brick streets reward unhurried exploring, including a stop at The Book Loft. East of Downtown, Franklin Park Conservatory brings gardens and exhibitions into the itinerary.
